Tools & Accessories

Before you get started on installing your ipe deck, make sure you have all the tools you’ll need. Here are our suggestions:

Saw Blades

Ipe is one of the densest, hardest woods out there, which is great for deck stability and longevity, but can make cutting a chore. Carbide tipped saw blades will stay sharper longer. Fewer teeth will reduce cutting friction and heat.

End Sealer

Ipe tends to check at the ends after cutting. To prevent this, it is imperative that you seal freshly cut ends as soon as possible. A paraffin wax based sealer is best. Oil based UV inhibitors are not effective. We strongly recommend Advantage Trim & Lumber Co. End Sealer.

Drill Bits

Just like with cutting, Ipe’s natural strength can make drilling difficult. Use a cobalt alloy drill bit for best results.

Other options are high speed steel drill bits, but they tend to fatigue, dull, and break rather quickly, or titanium nitride coated drill bits. As the titanium nitride coating wears off, however, performance worsens.

Screws

Stainless Steel. Ipe has a high level of tannic acid which reacts with zinc-coated fasteners such as galvanized screws. This reaction creates an unsightly dark stain. Most other types of non-stainless steel fasteners have a coating that will chip or separate when driven into dense ipe wood, exposing the bare carbon steel underneath and causing a stain.

Stainless steel screws will also resist rust, so they will last longer. When you’re building a deck with a wood that can last as long as ipe, it’s a good idea to use screws, such as Torx Drive Stainless Steel Deck Screws, that can keep up.

Plugs

The quickest, easiest way to install ipe decking is to face screw the boards. However, this may not look very nice. In order to keep the screw heads from showing on your ipe deck, try using plugs made from ipe wood. The only problem is that it can be difficult to match the exact color of your deck.

Hidden Fasteners

The best way to keep your deck surface clear is to use a hidden deck fastener system. You’ll have to either cut a slot in the side of the deck boards yourself, or purchase pregrooved ipe boards. We recommend using the Ipe Clip® system.

Other Fastening Methods

Under-mounted bracket systems are not recommended, because any movement in the wood can cause failure.

Because of its density, it is nearly impossible to hand nail ipe. Using a nail gun will cause splitting.

Do not glue ipe boards to the joists and secure them with finish nails. It will fail.

Board Straighteners

You’re bound to come across bent boards while installing your ipe deck. Board straighteners are ideal for tackling this problem. The best ones will lock in place, so you only need one person to straighten and fasten a board. Our favorite is the Hardwood Wrench™.

Hello,

We had a outdoor deck installed made of ipe wood in our South Carolina home. Since it was built6 months ago, gaps have appeared between some boards. These boards were removed and reinstalled, but still continue to gap. The installer has no idea how to fix the problem or knows why it is happening. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks much,

Eileen

It’s hard to say what exactly may have caused this problem. One strong possibility is that the deck boards were not allowed to acclimate properly. I’d recommend that you call your supplier and ask about it.

We are working through the details of an Ipe deck install prior to ordering/starting. We want to do small dado like cuts (instead of grooves) to accomodate the hidden fastener clips and I was wondering if it’s best to use a product like Ipe oil or the Ipe End Sealer wax to treat the dado cut areas prior to instalation? If yes, then which product – the oil or the wax?

Also it sounds like it’s best to use air dried Ipe vs the kiln dried Ipe for an exterior deck. Is that true?

First of all, if I understand your dado plan correctly, it will not work with a hidden fastener system like Ipe Clip.

Ipe Oil is intended to preserve the natural color of the wood and prevent UV damage. The wax is only necessary for end cuts. For cuts along the edge, no treatment is required.

As for the drying method, air dried will work best, but you still have to make sure that you acclimate the decking before installing it. See this post: http://ipedeckinginstallation.com/wood-prep/

When using the hidden clip method if instillation Is there a special technique that is used to join Ipe decking where the two ends of the deck board meet?

Yes, there is. Butt the two boards as close together as you can, then use one clip at the joint to secure both of the boards in place.

I’m looking to attach a stair post (a 4×4 treated post with an ipe slip case) at ground level to a 2×12 treated stringer. The structure of the piece would be: stringer/inner ipe slip case/4×4/outer ipe slip case.

For cost and strength reasons I would prefer to use galvanized carriage bolts vs. stainless steel.

I plan to countersink the head of the bolt into outside side of 4×4 then use gorilla glue to create a waterproof barrier between the 4×4 and outer ipe slip case…then drill a 1″ pass through hole on the inner portion of ipe case so the bolt does not come in direct contact w/ ipe….then continue on in normal fashion though the stringer.

is this nuts or will I still get discoloring? Does the bolt have to come in direct contact with the ipe?

Sorry if this is confusing – thanks

As long as the galvanized doesn’t touch the Ipe then you should be good, but if they are going to be in contact at all then chances are high you will get discoloration.

How would you recommend that I prepare a 4×4 Ipe post to receive a Titan guard rail anchor? What specific tools should I use?
Would you also recommend that I use a Titan gasket kit when attaching the 4×4 post to the Ipe decking on our Dryjoist deck? The deck and rail system are located where our house gets the most weather.
